Zakat fitrah is an obligation inherent in every Muslim who is able to approach the end of the month of Ramadan. This worship is not just an annual ritual, but has a very clear social purpose: to help the poor to share in the joy of Eid al-Fitr. Therefore, fiqh scholars pay great attention to the timeliness of its implementation.
However, in practice, there are still some people who are negligent or delay paying zakat fitrah until after the holiday has passed. This condition then raises questions among society: are people who do not pay zakat fitrah obliged to make up for the Ramadan fast?
Zakat Fitrah and its Relation to Fasting
In principle, zakat fitrah is an independent obligation. It is indeed related to the momentum of Ramadan, but it is not a valid requirement for fasting. This means that a person’s fast is still valid even if they have not paid zakat fitrah.
However, the obligation of zakat fitrah must still be fulfilled. If someone can afford it but delays the payment until after the Eid al-Fitr holiday without a justifiable reason, then he is sinning and is still obliged to pay it as a payment. qodlo zakat fitrahnot fasting qadha.
Ulama’s Views on Postponing Zakat Fitrah
The majority of scholars are from sects Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali believes that postponing zakat fitrah until after the holiday without ‘excuse me’ is a sin and still requires qodlo.
In the At-Tanbih fil Fiqh asy-Shafi’i mentioned:
It is not permissible to postpone it until Eid al-Fitr, as if he postpones it then he is sinning and must make up for it.
Meaning: “It is not permissible to delay zakat fitrah from the day of Eid al-Fitr. If anyone delays it, then he is sinning and must make up (pay it).” (At-Tanbih fi al-Fiqh asy-Shafi’i, p. 86)
A similar explanation is also found in Al-Mausu’ah al-Fiqhiyyah al-Kuwaitiyyah:
The Maliki, Syafii and Hanbali groups are of the opinion that whoever delays zakat fitrah until Eid al-Fitr even though he is still able to pay it, he is sinning and must make up for it.
Meaning: “The Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali schools of thought say that whoever delays zakat fitrah until after Eid al-Fitr, even though he is able to pay it, is sinning and must pay it.”
According to the Imam’s school of thought HanafiThe law of delaying zakat fitrah is makruh. However, the implementation time is considered broader and not limited to just holidays.
Still from the same source it is stated:
The Hanafi school of thought states that postponing is undesirable, however, according to them, the time for paying zakat fitrah is broad and does not narrow except at the end of life.
Meaning: “The Hanafi Madzhab states that delaying zakat fitrah is makruh. However, according to them, the time for implementation is broad and does not become narrow except towards the end of life.”
Why Can’t Zakat Fitrah Be Postponed?
The scholars explained that the main purpose of zakat fitrah is to help the poor so that they do not have to beg on holidays. Therefore, postponing it without reason is considered to violate the wisdom of the zakat law.
In the book Asnal Mathalib explained:
original matolib :
(It is prohibited to postpone it beyond Eid Al-Fitr)
Without reason, such as the absence of his money or the people who are entitled to it, because his intention is to prevent them from having to ask for it (and requires an immediate obligation), then if he postpones it without reason and immediately declares the increase, he says in its entirety, and the clear meaning of their words is that zakat on money deferred from the property is repayment, and the difference is that Fitrah is temporary, like prayer.
This means: “It is haram to postpone zakat fitrah from the holiday (‘Eid al-Fitr) without a reason, such as the absence of assets (which can be given zakat) or no person who is entitled to receive it. This is because the purpose of zakat fitrah is to meet their (poor people’s) needs so that they do not need to beg on that day.
If the zakat fitrah is postponed without reason, it must be paid immediately (directly/immediately). This assertion regarding the obligation to speed up is an additional explanation from the author.
In the book Al-Majmu’, it is stated that the external words of the ulama show that zakat on assets that is postponed after someone is able to pay it is still counted as implementation (ada’), not qodho.
The difference is that Zakat fitrah has a limited timejust like prayers are tied to certain times.”
The same thing is also emphasized in Mughni al-Muhtaj:
It is forbidden to postpone it beyond the Eid al-Fitr holiday without any reason, such as lack of money or the person entitled to it because they have deviated from their intention, namely not being able to ask for it on the holiday. If he delays it without reason, he is not obeying and fulfilling his obligations.
This means: “It is haram to postpone zakat fitrah until after the Eid al-Fitr without any excuse, such as not having any assets or not being able to find the person who is entitled to receive it. This is because with this delay the intended purpose of zakat fitrah is lost, namely fulfilling their (the poor’s) needs so that they do not have to beg on the day of happiness (holidays).
If someone delays his zakat fitrah without ‘reason’, then he is guilty and is still obliged to pay it (pay it afterwards).”
Based on the explanations of the scholars, it can be concluded that Not paying zakat fitrah does not oblige someone to fast during Ramadan. The fast remains valid. However, if someone postpones the payment of zakat fitrah until after Hari Raya without a valid reason, then he sinful and still obliged to pay zakat fitrah as soon as possible.
Therefore, zakat fitrah should be paid on time, it is even recommended before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. In this way, the aim of the Shari’a to bring happiness to all Muslims on Victory Day can truly be realized. Because Eid al-Fitr is not only about personal joy, but also about social concern that is shared together.
Hope it is useful. Wallohu a’lam.
PakarPBN
A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.
In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.
The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
