The Vredeburg Benteng Museum is one of the tourist attractions along Jalan Malioboro.

This building has been a silent witness to historical events that occurred in Yogyakarta since the Dutch colonial government entered Yogyakarta.

Located on Jalan Ahmad Yani No. 6, Near Malioboro and Yogyakarta Palace, the Vredeburg Fort Museum kept a long story since its inception in 1760 as a simple wooden fort at the orders of Sultan Hamengku Buwono I, at the Dutch pressure.

The fort was then strengthened permanently by Dutch architect Frans Haak in 1787 and was named Fort Rustenburg.

After the 1867 earthquake destroyed the building part, it was built again and changed its name to Fort Vredeburg, which means the fortress of peace.

Over time, this fort became a building that recorded important events that occurred in the city of Yogyakarta.

During the British control of 1811-1816, this fort was under the control of John Crawfurd over the orders of Governor General Thomas Stamford Raffles.

Starting from the Dutch colonial period, the British and Japanese occupation, to being used as the TNI headquarters after independence, this fort recording the important round of Indonesian history.

The Vredeburg Benteng Museum was inaugurated in 1992 as a special museum of the national struggle that presents more than 30 dioramas of life and interactive that illustrates the important moments of the capture of Diponegoro Pengeran to the Yogyakarta people in gaining independence.

Not only that, in this museum there are also audio visual rooms, auditoriums, and museum games that offer nuances of edutainment with a combination of education and entertainment.
