In the fast -paced digital era, news spread heavier than the tsunami disaster. Through social media such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, or X (Twitter), information no longer has to go through a long verification process. Unfortunately, many of this information is not necessarily true. In fact, not infrequently, news that has not been confirmed or even hoaks spread massively, cause panic, division, and slander.

Then what is the Islamic view of spreading hoaks news? Is spreading information that is not certain that the truth is only underestimated or is there a heavy fiqh legal consequence on the religious side?

Oral, written, and social sins

In the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad:

A Muslim is one of the Muslims from the tongue and his hand

Meaning: “A true Muslim is where Muslims survived oral and hands.” (HR. Imam Bukhori and Muslim)

Meaning: “Oral is mentioned specifically because it becomes an explanation of what is in the soul, as well as the hands because most of the actions are done with it. This hadith is general for oral, not for hands; because oral can talk about the past, present, and future. Unlike the hands, even though it can participate through writing, because the impact is also very large.” (Fathul Baari)

Writing is the second oral

Imam Ghazali repeats:

Al -Ghazali said: Gossip is united by expressing what he hates revealed, whether it is disclosure by saying, books, symbols, or cues. More correctly

Meaning: “Namimah is to express something that is not liked to be revealed, either with speech, writing, gestures, or symbols. Even the nature is to spread the secrets and open the veil that should be closed.” (Syarah Sullam Taufiq, p. 68)

Approve hoaks is also a big sin

Spreading hoaks is not only a violation of state law, but also a violation of deep Islamic ethics. Islam recommends tabayyun (clarification), maintaining the honor of others, and refrain from spreading unclear news.
