Lately, cyberspace has been rocked again by the presence of a viral trend from the latest Korean drama titled S line. In the series, a controversial and provocative premise emerges: everyone has red line over the head (called S line) which marks Number of sexual relations ever done. What’s interesting-or perhaps terrible-only one of the main characters of men who are able to see this line.

This phenomenon immediately sticking out into a public conversation on social media. Many citizens are curious, watching, even replicating this trend through short videos, memes, to other creative content. However, behind the sensation and greatness, this trend actually stores serious problems: Normalization opens sexual disgrace publicly.

Islam and the concept of covering up a disgrace

In Islam, the honor of a Muslim is very guarded. Opening the disgrace – both the disgrace of others and yourself – not something recommended, especially if it is related to personal sins and immoral acts. Rosululloh SAW said in the Hadith of the History of Imam Al-Bukhori:

Whoever will be given by a Muslim, will be seen on the day of resurrection

Meaning: “Whoever covers (disgrace) of a Muslim, then Allah will cover up (disgrace) on the Day of Judgment.” (HR. Imam al-Bukhori)

The hadith implies how important it is to keep the secret and disgrace, both the disgrace itself and others, as a form of protection against human dignity. Furthermore, in the hadith the history of Imam al-Hakim is mentioned:

The faculty of this -literacy is that God has been prohibited, so anyone in it, let him not seek the blessings of the book of God is above him

Meaning: “Stay away from evil actions that are forbidden by God. Whoever falls into it, let Him take shelter behind the curtain of God and repent to Him. For those who show us (His actions), we will do it to the law of God,” (Clock.

In the description of the fiqh scholars, it is explained that:

And from the chapter based on: that people given to Muslims are obliged to those who are unknown for good and corruption. His soul if you come obscene

Meaning: “This has become a decree in the sharia that covers (embarrassing) a Muslim is mandatory, as long as he is not a person known to be injured (other people) and do damage.

More than that, open your own disgrace or talk about sin openly just for content, lifestyle, or entertainment alone is included in the category Haram.

Syaikhul Islam Zakariya Al-Anshari even emphasized:

As for the insertion, it was destroyed or pulled out, and was forbidden to cut authentic news in it.

Meaning: “As for discussing personal disgrace (immoral acts) for leaving or openly, then the law is forbidden, based on authentic traditions in this case.” (Asnal Mathalib, Juz 4, p. 131)

S line trend: entertainment or value deviation?

The emergence of S line trends and public responses to it shows how today Pop culture often normalizes something that is seen as a violation of morals. When the entertainment standard is shifted into a space that dismantles the most private affairs of humans, we should ask: Where is our digital culture?

Should everything be viral and dramatic to be consumed? Is every unique thing worthy of imitating, even if it is contrary to the values of honor and Islamic morality?

Hope it is useful. Wallohu a’lam.
