In the Islamic boarding school environment, tradition hotmil Al-Qur’an is not just a religious ceremony, but has become part of a living and deeply rooted spiritual culture. Khotmil Al-Qur’an—both individually and in the form of a joint assembly—as well as khotmil Juz ‘Amma which is routinely carried out by the students, is a symbol of seriousness in building closeness to the Koran from an early age.
This tradition not only has educational value, but also contains strong spiritual, social and divine dimensions. Islamic boarding schools use khataman as a means of character building, strengthening the discipline of worship, and internalizing love for the KalamulLoh verses. Therefore, khotmil Qur’an does not exist as an empty ritual, but as part of a structured spiritual education system.
Normatively, the priority of completing the Al-Qur’an is a form of worship that has great rewards and blessings. One of its virtues is explained in the hadith of the Prophet SAW:
When a servant finished the Qur’an, sixty thousand angels prayed for him when he finished it.
Meaning: “If someone completes the Koran, then 60,000 angels ask forgiveness from him when he completes it.” (HR Ad-Dailami)
Our Fadiant Fadhilah Al-Qur’an According to the Purpose
In interpreting the above hadith, scholars tend to understand that fadhilah is obtained individuallynot congregational. This means that this special priority is intended for people who read the Koran in its entirety, starting from Surah al-Fatihah to Surah an-Nas.
One of these meanings is explained in the book as-Sirajul Munir Syarh al-Jami’is Shogir:
(When a servant finishes the Qur’an) it means every time he reads it from beginning to end (sixty thousand angels pray for him when he finishes it) it means they ask him for forgiveness. Al-Manawi said that it is possible that this number will be available if it has been sealed, and it turns out that what is meant by this number is diversity, not specificity.
Meaning: “When someone finishes reading the Koran, meaning when he reads the Koran from beginning to end, then 60,000 angels ask for forgiveness from him, which means asking for forgiveness for him. Imam al-Munawi said: ‘What is meant by the number of angels at the end of the Koran is clearly limited to indicating the meaning of many, not a specific number.”
(Sheikh Ali bin Ahmad al-Azizi, as-Siraj al-Munir Syarh al-Jami’is Shogirjuz 1, p. 111)
The confirmation of this meaning is also strengthened in the book at-Tanwir Syarh Jami’is Shogir:
(And who completed the Qur’an)
That is, he completes it to the end, because he knows this word
Meaning: “Whoever completes the Qur’an, the meaning is to finish reading the Qur’an until the end/khatam, because this meaning is the ‘urf of the pronunciation of the hadith.”
(Muhammad bin Ismail al-Hasani, at-Tanwir Syarh Jami’is Shogirjuz 10, p. 295)
From this explanation, it is clear that the priority of khatam Al-Qur’an is specifically related to individual reading perfectionnot just a gathering of science councils.
However, Islam also gives great priority to Al-Qur’an assemblynamely gathering to read and study the Koran together. This is confirmed in the hadith:
Whenever a people gather in one of God’s houses, reading God’s Book and discussing with each other, then calm descends upon them and mercy envelops them. The angels surrounded them, and Allah SWT called them among those who were with Him. Narrated by Ahmad.
Meaning: “A people do not gather in the houses of Allah’s houses (mosques) while chanting the Qur’an and studying the Qur’an among themselves, unless peace descends upon them, Allah’s mercy covers them, angels surround them and Allah names them among those who are with Him.” (HR. Imam Ahmad)
The ulama then explained that this priority was not limited to mosques. Imam an-Nawawi in Syarh an-Nawawi li al-Muslim confirm:
To achieve this priority, meetings in schools, ribats, and the like are attached to mosques, God willing, this is demonstrated by the following hadiths, because they are absolute and cover all situations, and the taboos in the first hadith are mostly impossible, especially at that time, so there is no concept to work with.
Meaning: “It is equated with a mosque in that the result is fadhilah, namely gathering in madrasas, Islamic boarding schools and similar places, God willing. This is shown by the hadith that follows which is absolute, so it covers all places. So limiting the meaning in the first hadith is out of common understanding, especially at that time. So there is no understanding that can be put into practice.”
(Imam Syarifuddin Yahya An-Naway, Syarh an-Nawawi lil Muslimjuz 17, p. 22)
The Tradition of Khotmil Al-Qur’an and Juz ‘Amma in Islamic Boarding Schools
In the context of Islamic boarding schools, tradition hotmil Al-Qur’an And khotmil Juz ‘Amma has a broader meaning than just individual rewards. It becomes:
- means spiritual education of students,
- media internalization of love for the Koran,
- instrument formation of manners and discipline in worship,
- as well as rides collective spiritual construction.
Khotmil Juz ‘Amma, in particular, is the initial phase in forming students’ relationship with the Koran, instilling a sense of love, courage to read, and spiritual self-confidence. Meanwhile, the Qur’an sermon is a symbol of spiritual maturity in the scientific journey of the students.
Thus, the khataman tradition in Islamic boarding schools is not a false claim of fadhilah, but is a combination of individual fadhilah and blessings of the Qur’an assemblybetween personal reward and congregational grace.
The tradition of reciting the Al-Qur’an and Juz ‘Amma in Islamic boarding schools is a spiritual heritage that not only has the dimensions of worship, but also education, civilization and character formation. He taught that the Koran should not only be read, but lived; not only recited, but instilled in the soul.
Islamic boarding schools with their khatam traditions build a generation that does not just memorize verses, but understands their meaning, not just fluency in reading, but strong faith. That’s where the Qur’an not only becomes a holy book, but becomes a holy book spirit of civilization. The Koran is not just read, but forms the soul. Not only concluded, but expressed in life behavior.
Hope it is useful. Wallohu a’lam.
